The Cavite State University (CvSU) through the Sugar Palm Research, Information, and Trade (SPRINT) Center, College of Engineering and Information Technology - Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering (CEIT-DAFE), and Knowledge Management Center - Knowledge Technology Transfer Office (KMC-KTTO), transferred the technology on granulated kaong brown sugar to Magallanes Women's Club Cooperative (MAWCO) in Magallanes, Cavite on March 9, 2022.
The transfer of technology was preceded by an opening message from Mr. Junser P. Magpantay, SPRINT Center director. He mentioned that MAWCO is the first cooperative that adopted the CvSU technology and further said that this will provide an additional source of income for the cooperative.
Ms. Joiada B. Reyes, the chairperson of MAWCO, warmly welcomed CVSU. Meanwhile, Ms. Lea B. Galvez, manager of MAWCO, gave a short message and mentioned that the transfer of the technology was an eye-opener to acknowledge the economic significance of sugar palm (kaong). Ms. Galvez also considered that their new endeavor is not just beneficial to the members of the cooperative but to the Municipality of Magallanes as well.
Dr. Marilyn M. Escobar, vice president for Planning and Development, a faculty of CEIT-DAFE, and one of the inventors of granulated kaong brown sugar, emphasized that the transfer of technology aimed to strengthen and empower the kaong industry. She also shared that the process of making kaong sugar is done in a traditional way. However, she also noted that with continuous studies, other possible methods may be developed for making kaong sugar.
