Prof. Edgardo A. Gonzales, a faculty in the Department of Crop Science (DCS) of the College of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Natural Resources (CAFENR), was designated by Dr. Hernando D. Robles, university president, as director of the Sugar Palm Research, Information and Trade (SPRINT) Center effective August 1, 2024.
Prof. Gonzales brings a depth of experience in agriculture, particularly in crop science. He was among the first batch of recipients of the Sanayan sa Kakayahang Agrikultura (SAKA) project of Cavite State University (then Don Severino Agricultural College) in 1988. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) in the same institution in 1994 and holds a Master of Science in Agriculture (MSA) which he completed in 2016. At present, he is taking his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agriculture at CvSU - Graduate School and Open Learning College.
He also holds an NC II and III in crop production. As faculty at the College of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Natural Resources (CAFENR), he was the chairperson of the Department of Crop Science (DCS) from 2023-2024 and is in charge of the Vegetable Production Area located in the Newly Acquired Land.
He is currently involved in the implementation of the extension project “Enhancement of Gulayan sa Paaralan Program,” a collaboration of the Extension Services and CAFENR – DCS that caters to 44 elementary and secondary schools in Damariñas City, Cavite..
He takes over from For. Junser P. Magpantay, who is currently on study leave.

A simple turnover ceremony was held on August 5, 2024, at the SPRINT Center Training Hall. Present were Prof. Gonzales, For. Magpantay, members of the SPRINT Research and Extension (R&E) Team, and SPRINT Center office and field personnel. For. Magpantay introduced the operations and facility development projects of the center as well as the research and extension endeavors of the R&E team.
The SPRINT Center was established in 2010 to serve as the institutional center of the university for the sugar palm research, development, and extension agenda. As SPRINT Center director, Prof. Gonzales will oversee the continual development of a sustainable, equitable, and environment-friendly sugar palm industry in Cavite and other provinces.
