SPRINT Center collaborating institutions renew commitment to sustainable sugar palm industry

In two separate visits to the center, the Department of Science and Technology - Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) through Dr. Loreto A. Novicio, Technology Innovation Division Chief and St. Catherine Family Helper Project, Inc. (St. Catherine FHP) through Mr. Albert A. Aquino, Executive Director assured the continual development of a sustainable, equitable, and environment-friendly sugar palm industry through collaborative research, development, and extension activities and projects.

DOST-FPRDI held its visit and meeting with Prof. Edgardo A. Gonzales, SPRINT Center Director, on August 29, 2024 to discuss important updates on the project "Development of High-Value Products Derived from Senile Sugar Palms (Arenga pinnata)," which intends to produce functional and aesthetic products from the trunks of senile or unproductive sugar palm trees. The meeting also discussed the necessary steps for the continuation of the project. For. Jefferson Rey M. Roxas, leader of the said project was also present during the meeting.


On the other hand, St. Catherine FHP held its visit and meeting with the SPRINT Center Director on September 16, 2024, with him were Hon. Alvin Truita, Sanggunian Bayan Member of Dauin, Negros Oriental, and Mr. Ruel Perez, leader of Baslay Highland Agriculture Cooperative (BASHACO), Brgy. Baslay, Dauin, Negros Oriental. They discussed the continued implementation of extension activities in the area as well as possible collaborative research to be conducted. Also present during the meeting were For. Junser P. Magpanaty, former SPRINT Center Director.
